Understanding Your Monthly Bill

Factors to Consider

There are many factors that go into the cost of electricity. We make every effort to keep costs as reasonable as we can for our customers (and on this website we’ve included tips to help you reduce your electric bill). Also, remember that any profits Summerside Electric makes are put back into the City, as this utility is owned by our municipality.

The following are some things that go into the cost of electricity:

Canada-US Exchange

The exchange rate has a direct impact on electricity rates in PEI because Summerside Electric purchase some of its electricity supply based on New England wholesale marketplace, which sold in US dollars.

Commodity-Based Prices

Much of our electricity supply comes form diesel generated power, so our electricity prices are dependent on the cost of diesel.

Supply and Demand

Summerside Electric is both a producer and buyer of electricity. Electricity produced by oil and natural gas-based generators is sold in the wholesale marketplace to buyers like us, offering the best price. The price of electricity is influenced by how much electricity is available for buyers of and how much demand exists in the wholesale marketplace.
