Saving Money at Home

There are many ways to decrease your energy bill.

Washers & Dryers - Dryers are electricity suckers. Doing a load a day can add $25 dollars to your electric bill alone.  Hanging your clothes outside to dry and using indoor drying racks are awesome ways to save money.

Electric Stoves - Cooking can use a lot of electricity. Get the most out of the electricity your stove uses by preparing all your dishes at the same time.  Using microwaves, slow cookers, toaster ovens etc… in place of your stove and oven can also save you money and time.

Dehumidifiers - Dehumidifiers can assist in keeping your home dry, mold free and comfortable.  In Summerside most people using dehumidifiers use them primarily in July and August when humidity is at its peak, but even still they can add significantly to your energy bill.  Save money by replacing your old dehumidifier with an ENERGY STAR®  (www.energystar.gov) model, which are more energy efficient and automatically turn off when the preferred humidity level is achieved.

Electric Heaters - Heating your home with electricity can be expensive. Reduce costs by making sure your home is very well insulated. Programmable thermostats will also assist you in controlling costs by maintaining your home’s temperature at about 20 °C when you are home and 15 °C when no one is in the residence or at night.

Air Conditioners - Air conditioners are big energy users in July and August.  Save money by setting them to no lower than 25 °C.  Save even more electricity by fans throughout your home instead.

Hot Water Heaters - Electric hot water heaters are can be one of the largest energy users in your home. Your electricity use depends on the number and length of showers you and your family take, the loads of laundry you wash in hot water instead of cold and the number of loads of dishes you wash in a week. Spend less by taking shorter showers, using low flow shower heads, repairing leaky faucets, washing full loads of clothes in cold. Solar hot water systems could be an option for families that use a lot of water and are looking to control costs in the long run.
