Energy Saving Tips

Save Energy Throughout the Seasons

The following tips will help you save on electric costs over the course of a year.

Spring Energy Saving Tips

  • Vacuum the coils of your refrigerator. Pet hair and dust build up on the coils, forcing the motor to work harder which uses more electricity.
  • Did you know that dissolved minerals from the insides of your water heater tank can make it more difficult to heat your water? Clean your water heater each spring.
  • If you can plant trees around your air conditioning unit, you could save 10% on your electricity costs than if the unit is in direct sun.
  • Update your refrigerator. An old refrigerator uses twice as much electricity as a newer one.
  • Look for insulated panels if you’re updating your drapery. Those will keep the heat in during the winter, and block out the heat of the sun during the summer.
  • Use a clothesline for drying laundry.

Summer Energy Saving Tips

  • Ceiling fans will cost less in electricity than an air conditioning unit. Ensure the blades are spinning counter clockwise to create a gentle wind.
  • Open your windows to allow air flow through your home.
  • Use toaster ovens, BBQs, and microwaves more often than the oven for cooking. You will keep your home cooler, and save on electricity.
  • If you use an air conditioner, make sure it is Energy Star® rated and the proper size for your home.
  • Turn off the air conditioner when nobody is home.
  • Fill plastic containers with water and place them in your freezer. A freezer works most efficiently when filled to capacity. Don’t overfill, however.

Fall Energy Saving Tips

  • Bank your home for added insulation.
  • Install low flow showerheads to use less water. And shorten your showers.
  • Have your heating system serviced at the start of the heating season.
  • Ensure your attic is properly insulated.
  • Cover or remove window air conditioners.

Winter Energy Saving Tips

  • LED lights use 90% less energy than the older style bulbs. Replace your holiday bulbs with energy efficient versions.
  • Turn off the heat in unused rooms.
  • Because you use the lights more in the winter than summer (with fewer daylight hours) switch bulbs to compact fluorescents to save on energy costs.
  • Change the filters on your furnace.
  • Lower the thermostat when you’re not at home.
  • Clear your vents of furniture for optimal air flow.
  • Change your ceiling fans to a clockwise motion for the push of warm air back down to the ground.

Other Energy Saving Tips

Electric Heating

  • Install programmable thermostats
  • Ensure your home is well insulated
  • Program your thermostats to 15-16 degrees at night and when nobody is home

Electric Water Heater

  • You use 20 gallons of water per 10 minute shower, 30 gallons of water per load of laundry. Save energy (and water) by reducing showers, installing low flow shower heads, washing clothes in cold water (always wash full loads).
  • Consider installing a solar hot water system.

Clothes Dryers

  • Consider using a clothesline or drying rack for drying your laundry.

And always turn off the lights when you leave a room!
