The Official Plan is a critical building block in the City of Summerside’s strategic planning approach to management. With a strategic vision and long-term development goals, the plan establishes the framework for specific policies that shape a variety of general issues, including economic development and growth management.
The purposes of the Official Plan are as follows:
- To record results of the City’s planning process in formulating policies for land use and development, infrastructure, and ongoing planning projects
- To provide a policy action guide for drafting and administering the City’s new development control bylaw
- To provide a common reference support document for Council decision making on zoning, subdivision, and other development matters, and to guide City staff in advising Council
- To share vision, local knowledge and information, planning principles and values, and policy between elected officials, City staff, property owners, citizens, and developers on planning for the City’s future
Citizen input ensures community interests are represented during the development process. The Official Plan Committee, which contributed to the development of the 2016 Official Plan, was comprised of nine citizens representing broad community interest groups including real estate, developers, and social and community wellness. While the 2016 Official Plan is now drafted, we still welcome interest in the Official Plan Committee.
