Designate your Home a Heritage Property
In accordance with our Heritage Bylaw, a building can be recognized as a Designated Heritage Property (protected) or as a Registered Historic Place (not protected). If you want to get a place formally recognized as a heritage property in PEI check first to see that it is not already listed on the PEI Register of Historic Places or the Canadian Register of Historic Places.
The process for designating a heritage building inolves a multi-department effort and collaboration between Wyatt Heritage Properties staff and Technical Services staff. Heritage staff assist with heritage profiles, histories, and research-related tasks, while Technical Services is responsible for the heritage designation.
If your historic property hasn’t been recognized, contact a heritage officer by phoning 902-432-1332 or visiting the MacNaught History Centre in person (275 Fitzroy St, Summerside). Staff are available to meet with property owners to talk about the benefits of identifying, learning about, appreciating, and conserving the heritage values found. If the property has never before been profiled, Technical Services staff work in partnership with Heritage staff to complete a heritage evaluation, as stipulated in the Heritage Bylaw. This research results in a profile (history) of the property and a classification of its historical significance. This profile and evaluation is provided to the property owner.
Applicants will need to complete a development application form.
