Spring Tree Maintenance
Tree Maintenance is one of the most import aspects of the City’s Green Spaces department. The maintenance program begins usually in mid-May to coincide with our beach maintenance program (much of the same heavy equipment is used for both procedures).
In early spring, prior to the maintenance schedule, an assessment is conducted regarding tree safety and planting on public and private property. Trees observed during this period having potential to cause safety issues are noted on a tree maintenance application.
Tree maintenance and removal of large trees is conducted by a contractor. The contractor is responsible, before starting work, to provide proof of insurance and to be in good standing with Occupational Health and Safety.
City Green Space Staff work in support of the contractor, assisting with cleanup, chipping of debris, signaling and work place safety monitoring. The City’s primary responsibilities in regards to Urban Forestry include:
- Safety pruning of public trees
- Removal of diseased and unsafe public trees
- Assisting citizens in identifying diseased and unsafe trees
- Submitting of tree samples suspected of being infected with disease or insects
- Planting replacements of diseased and unsafe trees
- Removal of stumps from trees removed the previous Spring
- Education and participation of local groups to the importance of maintaining a healthy urban forest
- Directing special initiatives relating to trees such as conducting of a tree inventory and planting initiatives
