Construction is underway at Billy Bridges Park (formerly Notre Dame Park) as part of an overall accessible park redevelopment in one of Summerside’s most visited parks and green spaces. The park will be named for Billy Bridges, the Canadian Paralympic sledge hockey player from Summerside.
Phase one of this multi-year plan at Billy Bridges Park will include a new boundless playground structure and sensory activities, as well as paved paths throughout the park. This enables anyone with a wheelchair or special needs to access the park as well as join in the fun with their peers on the playground. “This is a first for Summerside,” said JP Desrosiers (Director of Community Services for The City of Summerside). “It is important for us to have a city that is inclusive. We are excited to be entering phase one of construction at this park and look forward to continuing the project and perhaps others throughout the City’s parks system.”
Billy Bridges Park will remain open while the renovation begins, however the public is asked to respect the construction boundaries and remain away from the sectioned-off area. Once the structure is installed, the paving of pathways will begin -- at this time, the park will be closed for approximately three days until paving is completed. Updates on renovations/closures will be available on the City’s website and social media. It is expected that the park will fully reopen at the end of October and an official opening ceremony will be announced once phase one of the project has concluded.
Park hours: 6:00 am – 10:00 pm
