Calculating the Cost of Running an Appliance

How much Electricity are your Appliances Using?

You can determine how much your appliances are costing you in electricity, as long as you can find their wattage.

To find the wattage (W) of your appliance, look in the manual, or check for a stamp somewhere on the item.

If you can’t find the wattage, look for the amps (A) and volts (V). Use the following formula to figure out (W): amps x volts = watts

Then consider how often you use the appliance, in hours, to determine kilowatts used.

Watts x hours of use divided by 1000 = kilowatts of electricity used.

For instance, if your oven is 3000 watts and it takes two hours to cook dinner, the formula will look like:

3,000 W x 2 hours (6,000) divided by 1000 = 6 kilowatts

If a kilowatt of energy costs $0.12, dinner cost $0.72 worth of energy to cook.

You can borrow an Energy Meter through the PEI library system, or look for energy meters at retail stores.
