Summerside Electric Releases the Draft Capacity Resource Plan
February 20, 2019
Summerside Electric has been looking into ways to create local capacity to ensure a more resilient, more secure, cost effective resource. Additional criteria include reducing the carbon footprint of our electrical capacity needs while satisfying the operational requirements as a North American electric utility.
The report sought responses to a very basic question:
What can Summerside Electric afford to do to meets its local obligations while reducing the need to purchase from New Brunswick Power’s capacity and its related cost fluctuations?
The report studies various options to meet this need, comparing them against current costs of importing capacity from the mainland. As an Island it is especially important to have local on-island resources that can be used in times of need. Separated from the mainland, Islanders must take measures to protect both the economy of PEI and the well-being of its residents.
“The draft report will assist the City of Summerside to develop a long-term operations plan for Summerside Electric which will incorporate energy security and resiliency well out into the future,” said Mayor Basil Stewart.
The City looked for input from its residents regarding the report during two open houses on February 28, 2019.
