Cultural Centre - Lefurgey

Explore our Culture

The Lefurgey Cultural Centre delivers a diverse array of activities that enhance the lives of Prince Edward Islanders and our visitors. Once the home of Wanda Wyatt’s maternal grandfather, John E. Lefurgey, this stately historic residence was acquired by Miss Wyatt in 1966 and officially opened five years later as a centre for local artisans to practice and teach their crafts.

In recent years, activities at Lefurgey Centre have expanded beyond arts and crafts to include school programs, culinary events, creative fundraisers, meetings and presentations, heritage education and to provide an inspiring intimate venue for local musicians. It is cherished by the community as an unmatched heritage space that is also available for rent for special private functions.

Lefurgey family members called the property their ‘Bonny Castle,’ granting it the air of a romantic past which for the Lefurgeys included United Empire Loyalist roots. The romance survives in its architecture, its beautiful space and its place in the community. It is the brain trust for Culture Summerside and it is a survivor, saved from complete destruction by the Summerside Fire Department who conquered a devastating fire in 2004. Some say the Lefurgey Cultural Centre symbolizes the triumph of the human spirit over adversity.
